Treatment Centers - What Makes One Different From the Next?

by Jonathan Huttner

Treatment centers that deal specifically with drug addiction are known as drug treatment centers that provide drug rehab to its residents. These addiction treatment centers are dedicated to the treatment of those who stay "on campus" in a controlled environment. There are of course a number of other types of treatment centers that should be discussed and understood if you are to be an educated consumer. While there a great many treatment centers that relate to the medical industry such as; cancer treatment centers, children's treatment centers or treatment centers for learning disabilities, this article will focus on treatment centers in the fields of addiction and compulsive disorders. If you need immediate drug or substance addiction treatment I wuould suggest that you call 1-800-99-DETOX for immediate help.

Addiction Treatment Centers for Alcoholism

Alcohol treatment centers, like drug treatment centers, should be residential and provide several distinct treatment services. Not all addiction treatment centers are the same so it is important to investigate the different philosophies presented by each, as well as the capability of each one to provide quality treatment. Finding a treatment center for alcoholism that focuses on individualized treatment and follow-up care is proven to be the most valuable to sustainable long-term recovery.

Treatment Centers for Dual Diagnosis

A center specializing in dual diagnosis treatment programs is one capable of providing treatment for several co-existing disorders. These disorders usually consist of alcoholism or drug addiction combined with a psychiatric disorder. Dual diagnosis treatment centers must have a staff trained in treating mental health issues as well as addiction. Unlike alcohol treatment center patients, every patient admitted to the dual diagnosis treatment center must receive a psychiatric evaluation to rule out or address any mental health problems. This type of treatment center is highly specialized in dealing with dual issues. When dual diagnosis patients receive concurrent treatment, they have a much better chance of a successful recovery outcome.

Treatment Centers for Eating Disorders

Like alcoholism and dual diagnosis, a treatment center for eating disorders is a residential center with a variety of medical and clinical services, all under one roof. A treatment center for eating disorders may specialize in only one type of eating disorder or provide treatment for any number of eating addictions. It is not uncommon to find a treatment center specializing in anorexia, while another treatment center is designed to treat bulimia and binge eating. The difference in treatment centers has more to do with the degree of medical and psychiatric services offered, rather than the eating disorder itself. For example, the individual with anorexia generally requires more medical intervention than the bulimic or compulsive eater. Choosing a center that best fits the needs of each individual is certainly the best course of action for the elimination of eating disorders.

Treatment Centers for Sex Addiction

Sex addiction or compulsive sexual behavior should also be treated in a residential treatment center. As with many other disorders, the greatest benefit of a residential treatment center is its ability to provide structure and accountability. Many individuals who enter sex addiction treatment centers have a co-existing psychiatric diagnosis. It is not uncommon to see an individual with a sex addiction also require treatment for a drug addiction as well.

Location! Location!
Should You Select a Treatment Center Close to Home?

The answer to this is really quite simple... you should go to the treatment center that best fits your recovery needs. Near or far, the location is not nearly as important as the care and the existence of an inclusive family recovery program.

It is hard to ascertain which treatment center will produce the best results, based solely on location, but the fact is, no matter where you go, your family NEEDS to be involved. It is imperative that an addicted individual be placed in a treatment center that understands the value of family members and provides a comprehensive family program. This program should last a minimum of three days and include the family members of other patients residing at the treatment center. This allows family members to share information and feelings, and realize that they are not alone in their struggles to understand addiction. A comprehensive family recovery program is an integral part of any successful drug treatment center program and an important factor in choosing the center that best fits your needs.

Additional Addiction Treatment Centers

There are, of course, a great number of additional treatment centers that focus on disorders and addictions not mentioned above. For additional information on any number of different addiction treatment centers explore this site or call 1-800-99-DETOX.
