A substance abuse counselor is an individual licensed and trained to address mental health issues as they pertain to drug or alcohol abuse. They usually hold one of the following credentials:
- A license as a Certified Addiction Professional (C.A.P.)
- Masters Degree in Psychology or Social Work
- A license in Mental Health Counseling (L.M.H.C.)
- Ph.D.
Substance abuse counselors can practice either on an outpatient basis or within a residential substance abuse treatment program. Counselors for substance abuse are a part of a treatment team that includes psychiatrists and medical doctors to get the patient back on their feet.
Substance Abuse Counselors and Treatment
Patients suffering from substance abuse will engage in both one-on-one and group sessions with the substance abuse counselor in a learning environment where they can "relearn" how to communicate and express their emotions in constructive ways. Many counselors, who may be former addicts themselves, can also help patients with a dual diagnosis and dealing with mental illness on top of their substance abuse issues. Although this diagnosis is difficult to treat, a counselor who has experienced the dependency issues drugs create has the exact perspective needed to deal with the patient's behaviors. A patient working with a counselor who has "been in their shoes" also provides them added hope with a real life example of their own possible future, which is something drugs cannot do.
