Residents live together under a set of rules administered by the staff, often including a no alcohol or drugs on the premise policy, 100% abstinence from substance abuse and no engagement in violent behavior. In order to ensure the rules and regulations of the sober house are enforced, most recovery homes have a 24-hour rotating staff on hand, also acting as a support for the residents.
Residents may be required to pay room and board, participate in self-help groups or house meetings and maintain the residence through cooking, cleaning and other household chores.
