Sober Houses

Sober living homes are residential facilities designed for recovering substance abusers who have completed a drug or alcohol rehabilitation program and wish to continue their sobriety in a safe and substance-free environment.  Often called halfway houses or sober houses, sober living homes give patients the time required to find a new job and a permanent place to live, or to take care of legal or social service issues.

Sober Living Homes Provide a Stable Living Environment

Many times, residents living in sober living homes have just completed a substance abuse rehabilitation program and do not have a stable home environment in which they can return.  Sober living homes provide this type of environment for residents to maintain their sobriety and prevent future relapse without the distraction of unstable relationships or negative living environments that may involve substance abuse triggers.

For many people who have struggled with drug or alcohol addiction, returning to their previous home life is not their best option in order to realize long-term recovery.  Sober housing can offer the respite and freedom recovering addicts need to build a healthy and drug-free life.

Sober House Rules, Curfews and Staff Support

Sober living homes allow residents to apply the lessons and skills learned from rehabilitation treatment to everyday life.  Residents are required to live by the house rules, which normally include zero tolerance policies for drug or alcohol possession, abstaining from violent behavior and learning to live with the rest of the sober living house community.

The structure of sober houses can vary from place to place but most include a rotating 24-hour staff to help residents maintain a curfew, follow the house rules and participate in support groups.  Residents may be responsible for daily chores in maintaining the household, such as cooking and cleaning. They must agree not to bring drugs or alcohol into the house and usually are required to attend self-help groups or meetings.

Residents often agree to a list of rules before moving into a sober living home, which keep the living environment safe and drug-free for its occupants. A staff member may remove a resident from the sober house if he or she does not abide by these rules.

Finding a Sober Living House

Deciding what sober living home is right for you takes time and consideration.  You may want to know how many people are living in a sober house, what the requirements are for residency and how long the sober living home will allow you to stay.  Some individuals may have a career, family or other obligations that require them to reside at a local sober living house, while others wishing to make a clean break from their former lifestyle may choose a sober living house in a new town or state.
