Prescription addiction among seniors is a growing problem. No doubt, when you think of those who require drug addiction treatment, seniors are not the first age group that comes to mind. Prescription addiction among seniors may not be as wide-spread a problem as it is among those in their 20's and 30's, but it does exist, and drug addiction treatment for seniors has become extremely important.
If you, or someone you know needs help call 1-800-993-3869, 24 hours a day for confidential help on addiction drug treatment for seniors, or any other age group.
Why is it that prescription addiction among seniors is on the rise? A number of factors are at play. First, those in the 50 plus age range seem to think they are immune to prescription addiction. After all, so many of them grew up in an age of "drugs, sex and rock'n roll," and suffered no ill effects then, so why would it affect them now? Another important consideration is that the senior population is larger than ever before. People are living longer, thus prescription addiction among seniors is a matter of numbers. The more seniors there are, the more prevalent any behavior will appear statistically. In addition, many seniors are using prescription pain relievers on a regular basis. Originally these prescription drugs were obtained legally by a prescribing physician. Unfortunately many seniors are looking for a quick-fix so they can get back to their busy lives, and they begin to double up on their meds, causing an accidental, but detrimenl addiction.
Seniors and Addiction Drug Treatment Detox
Addiction treatment for seniors should begin in a medical detox with 24 hour nursing and a full complement of medical services. The medical director and psychiatrist should be licensed physicians and trained in addiction medicine. The psychiatrist is especially important in senior addiction treatment as many seniors have developed psychiatric symptoms that could be due to age or drug addiction. Detox is usually followed up with a complete rehab program. Next, the senior in addiction treatment will require comprehensive planning for returning to "normal life," addiction-free. A facility that provides aftercare services is of the utmost importance to encourage a lasting recovery.
