What is Peyote and Mescaline?

Peyote and Mescaline Addiction
Peyote

Peyote is a small and spineless cactus whose principal active ingredient is the hallucinogen 3, 4, 5-trimethoxyphenethylamine. The top of the cactus contains disc-shaped buttons that are derived from the roots of the cactus. These buttons are dried and then chewed or soaked in water to produce an intoxicating liquid.  Mescaline has been produced in synthetic form. It is considered a Schedule I drug under the Controlled Substance Act of 1970.

According to the government's drug abuse reports on hallucinogens, the hallucinogenic dose of mescaline is about 0.3 to 0.5 grams and lasts about 12 hours. Mescaline can be extracted from peyote or produced synthetically. Abuse may lead to addiction.

The human brain is not designed to hallucinate in the normal state of being.  The hallucinations produced by these drugs are an abnormality in the functioning of the brain caused by peyote or mescaline.  In fact, when someone suffers from a mental illness that creates hallucinations he/she will take medications to prevent hallucinations, rather than to induce them.  This is the paradox of an addiction to a hallucinogenic drug.

Street Names: Buttons, Cactus, Mesc, Peyoto, Micro-dots
Misspellings: Payote, Mesceline, Mescalin, Mescelin, Payote, Paote

What is Peyote and Mescaline Addiction?

The structure of mescaline is similar to that of LSD in that both drugs mimic a neurotransmitter called serotonin. Serotonin is, in part, responsible for cognition and emotional balance.  When one is suffering from mescaline addiction or peyote addiction, the addict repetitively takes these substances and lives in a world of extraordinarily altered emotional states.  Although this altered state may be pleasant, it is not reality, and only the user experiences it.

Experiencing life in an altered state isolates the user from the rest of the world.  This is similar to what happens with a person with severe mental illness, in that they live in their own “dream world.” Furthermore, not all “trips” are good trips.  Sometimes the pleasurable hallucinogenic state that the person seeks is replaced by horrific visions and thoughts.  These disruptive perceptions and feelings cannot be stopped once they have started. The user must wait for the mescaline or peyote to be metabolized as the sensations, sights, and feelings dissipate.

Symptoms of Peyote and Mescaline Addiction

The desired effect of peyote or mescaline is to enter into a state of altered perception, or a dream-like state.  However, it can induce long term and potentially permanent changes in the structure and function of the brain.  The human body reacts violently to mescaline by inducing vomiting, knowing that it is a poison.

The following is a list of the common effects of peyote and mescaline:

  • Altered perception including delusions and hallucinations
  • Increased temperature
  • Nausea, vomiting and stomach pain
  • Increased blood pressure
  • Increased heart rate
  • Loss of appetite
  • Weakness
  • Numbness
  • Sleeplessness
  • Tremors

Peyote and mescaline are not available from pharmaceutical companies.  Because they are often made in street labs, mescaline is oftentimes not pure, or is mixed with a multitude of other substances, such as cocaine, MDMA (Esctasy), heroin, etc.

A person who abuses these drugs will respond differently to the drug based upon the person’s personality, frequency of use, support systems, the surroundings, and psychological history. If a mental health disorder existed prior to drug use, it will be exacerbated by peyote and mescaline and possibly lead to paranoid schizophrenia symptoms.

Peyote and Mescaline Withdrawal

This withdrawal syndrome is produced because the user now has a relative lack of serotonin, which leads to dysphoria, depression, and difficulties in judgment.  These, along with perceptual disturbances and problems with sleep regulation and appetite require medical treatment by someone who has expertise in the treatment of addiction.

Peyote and mescaline withdrawal may require a variety of behavioral therapies as well as medication to counter act the side effects cause by this addiction. It can be difficult to overcome the depression and reality shifts caused by this drug abuse. Frequently these abusers will have hallucinations and will require some form of sedation. A spiritual component to treatment is helpful for people who abuse peyote and mescaline as these drugs have the reputation of providing one with spiritual experiences and insight.
