What is Percocet?

Percocet can depress the central nervous system (CNS) and is one of the opioid (opiate) drugs classified as a narcotic medication. CNS drugs are used to reduce the sensation of pain, anxiety, some insomnia, and stress and directly affect the neurotransmitters.

Percocet is a combination of acetaminophen and oxycodone. The active ingredient in Tylenol, acetaminophen, intensifies the pain reducing effect of oxycodone. Together these compounds create a powerful pain reliever. With Percocet, much like codeine and morphine (also opioid drugs), addiction can develop quickly.

The ever growing number of prescription drug abusers has caused great concern both in the medical community and in governmental agencies. In an attempt to more closely regulate opiates and other narcotic medications, some states have implemented a data control system tracking the prescribing and dispensing of these drugs.

What is Percocet Addiction?

The brain is influenced by the naturally occurring chemicals that control communications through the firing of neurotransmitters. Narcotic analgesics alter the functioning of the natural neurotransmitters. The body adjusts to the drug levels of addictive drugs such as Percocet by increasing or decreasing the number of receptors in the brain. One reason opiates are used is that they successful block sensations of pain, anxiety, muscle strain, depression, fear, and a host of other conditions, and they induce euphoria (a state of well-being).

But, reliance on an addictive drug such as Percocet is not static. The more one takes Percocet, the more the body craves it, thereby building the body’s tolerance for the drug. The body will demand an ever increasing dosage of Percocet, without which, an increase in withdrawal symptoms will begin. More and more Percocet pills will need to be taken. To eliminate Percocet withdrawal symptoms, other powerful narcotic drugs can be sought. The risk of overdose is then greatly increased. Medically supervised Percocet detox and drug addiction treatment are then necessary.

Certain herbal compounds such as Valerian Root in combination with Percocet can have a negative impact upon the body’s regular functions such as breathing. It should be noted that acetaminophen, one compound within Percocet, taken in large dosages can cause permanent liver damage. Because of the addictive qualities of Percocet, withdrawal symptoms can occur within hours of stopping the medication, even if it was taken as prescribed. Percocet  withdrawal symptoms are both physiological and psychological.

Initially, when Percocet is taken there is a sense of peace or sometimes the feeling of euphoria. Soon, the adverse effects become prominent. Certain groups of people such as the elderly and non-tolerant patients who have asthma run an increased risk of pulmonary complications from Percocet use. Percocet abuse can mask the symptoms of head injuries and it can cause heart patients to suffer cardiac distress.

Percocet addiction can lead to problems with the endocrine system. Thus, men can suffer from testicular atrophy while women will suffer from amenorrhea (the loss of the menses) because the natural chemicals that help the hypothalamus function are suppressed by opiate abuse. Unfortunately, the number of emergency room visits due to an overdose from Percocet and oxycodone has increased by 500% in just a few years.

Percocet addiction is progressive. You can't control the level of drug needed. Tolerance to Percocet means your body needs more and more. Before you destroy your body and your life, Recovery Connection coordinators can help. Call 1-800-993-3869 now and get into a treatment program that will help rebuild your life.

Signs and Symptoms of Percocet Addiction

Percocet addiction is one of the more severe opioid addictions because it contains the powerful narcotic called oxycodone.  Those with Percocet addiction will display:

  1. Impaired judgment
  2. Nodding off behavior
  3. Financial instability
  4. Mood swings
  5. Frequent doctor visits to multiple doctors and to emergency rooms
  6. A multitude of insurance pharmacy claims for Percocet
  7. Paraphernalia that is used to crush, snort, smoke, or inject the drug
  8. A change of lifestyle, friends, or other social patterns
  9. Withdrawal symptoms when the drug is not  available such as sweating, nausea, vomiting, irritability, diarrhea, dilated pupils, and extreme drug seeking behavior

Percocet withdrawal symptoms can develop in a short period of time whether taken as prescribed or not. Withdrawal symptoms from Percocet are difficult to manage alone. A person seeking to detox from the drug is best advised to seek a professional and medically monitored detox. It is never recommended that Percocet usage be abruptly stopped. Withdrawal symptoms can be severe leading a person back to using rather than face the pain and anxiety that accompanies Percocet withdrawal.

Pregnant women suffering from Percocet abuse should seek medical advice before abruptly stopping the drug as the fetus will experience withdrawal, which places great strain on the fetus and could possibly lead to fetal death and miscarriage. A medical professional knowledgeable in Percocet detoxification should be consulted first.

Once the Percocet detox has been completed, it is strongly recommended that a patient transfer directly into a Percocet addiction treatment program. Percocet detox does not address issues relating to addictive behavior nor does Percocet detox provide the patient with knowledge about relapse prevention, triggers, medication management or other issues related to Percocet addiction.
