Missouri Addiction Treatment Statistics
In 2009, the Treatment Episode Data Set indicated that 48,628 people entered drug and alcohol rehabs in Missouri. Of that number, 68.5 % were male and 31.5% were female.
Alcohol & Drug Addiction Rehab Admission Statistics for Missouri in 2010There were 257 addiction treatment facilities in 2006. That number has remained consistent since 2002. 67 alcohol and drug rehabs were able to offer residential care but only 10 facilities offered opioid treatment.
Rates for alcohol abuse or dependence in 2006 remained above average for all age groups in Missouri while rates for drug dependence have been below the national average for the same time. 18-25 year olds were among the group most suffering from unmet treatment needs for alcohol dependency in 2006 and it ranked among the highest in the country for this demographic.
For drug dependency and unmet treatment needs, the figures varied greatly from year to year. Coinciding with the unmet treatment needs of those in Missouri is the rising number of those suffering from serious psychological distress. Psychological distress and substance abuse are more and more commonly connected.
Alcohol Addiction in Missouri
In 2010, 10,600 people entered alcohol addiction treatment in Missouri for alcohol as a primary substance of abuse with an additional 8,605 people who entered alcohol addiction treatment with alcohol combined with a secondary drug of abuse.
Commonly Abused Drugs in Missouri
According to the most recent data, Missouri has experienced an increase in marijuana and methamphetamine use over the last two decades. Drug only admissions comprised 45% of all admissions have tripled from 1992 to 2006.
The second most commonly abused class of drugs were stimulants (including methamphetamine) for those who entered drug addiction treatment in 2007.
In 2010, Missouri became one more state in the nation to implement the prescription data base.
3,277 people were admitted to treatment for cocaine addiction. The most common form of ingestion was smoking. 673 people were treated for cocaine/crack addiction who used the drug other than smoking it.
In 2010, 4,341 people were admitted to addiction treatment facilities for heroin addiction. Overall, rates of heroin overdose have dramatically increased in certain counties with Missouri.
Marijuana was the most commonly cited drug of abuse in Missouri in 2007. There were 12,052 individuals who entered treatment for marijuana addiction. The majority of those entering treatment were 21-25 years olds. 79% of all those admitted for marijuana addiction were males.
There were 5,088 admissions for drug and alcohol treatment for amphetamine addiction in 2010. The latest figure for people who went to rehab for methamphetamine is not available, but all reports indicate that the number is increasing rapidly.
In 2010, the two largest drug categories for people who entered drug rehab in Missouri were tranquilizers at a rate of 486 persons followed by PCP at the rate of 326 individuals. The PCP rate of admissions was slightly higher in Missouri than in other states.
According to the Treatment Episodes Data Set, Missouri had 2,922 people who entered treatment for opiates other than heroin. The largest demographic receiving treatment for opiate addiction was in the 21-25 year old age group. The percent between men and women for other opiate addiction was fairly equal.
Missouri Drug and Alcohol Fatalities, Injuries and Drug Court Statistics
In some states, the number of meth lab seizures has been significantly reduced. Unfortunately, in Missouri the number of meth lab seizures has risen between 2007 and 2009 from 1,261 to 1,732 incidents.
There were 16 law enforcement task forces in 2007 to work in the areas of Missouri with the biggest threat of drug trafficking, sales, and use. The number of drug induced deaths in 2007 remained consistent with the national figure. There were 730 drug deaths related to drug use compared with 1,054 deaths from motor vehicle accidents and 759 deaths from firearm incidents in the same year.
According to a news report on 9/01/11, the Madison County State Attorney stated that heroin related crimes had increased between 30-40%, with heroin deaths twice the number of that in 2010. In 2005, there were 630 drug related arrests.
