What is Borderline Personality Disorder?
Borderline personality disorder is best characterized by impulsivity, pervasive instability in interpersonal relationships, behavior, self-image and mood. It is a serious mental illness that usually begins in early adulthood.
Borderline personality disorder affects two percent of adults – mostly young women. It is often the cause of suicide attempts and accounts for 20 percent of psychiatric hospitalizations.
Borderline Personality Disorder Symptoms
If someone you know is experiencing five or more of the borderline personality disorder symptoms listed below, they may be suffering from borderline personality disorder.
- Transient, stress related paranoid ideation or severe associative symptoms
- Recurrent suicidal behavior, gestures or threats
- Recurrent self-mutilating behavior
- Frantic efforts to avoid real or imagined abandonment
- Impulsivity in at least two areas that are potentially self destructive (drug abuse, alcohol abuse, compulsive overeating or bulimia, sex, spending)
- An unstable self image
- Chronic feelings of emptiness
- A pattern of unstable, intense relationships
- Difficulty in managing anger (fights, displays of temper, constantly angry or resentful)
- Instability due to a marked reactive mood (irritability, anxiety lasting several hours, intense episodic dysphoria)
It is not unusual for people suffering from borderline personality disorder to turn to drugs or alcohol in order to cope with the illness. You may look to elevate or change your mood through the use of various substances and before you realize it, become dependant or addicted to those substances.
