Louisiana Addiction Treatment Statistics
In 2010, there were 26,334 people who were admitted into drug and alcohol rehab for addiction.
According to the 2006 National Survey of Substance Abuse Treatment Services (N-SSATS), Louisiana had a total of 145 alcohol and drug rehabs.
Across the last 15 years, there has been a small decline in the number of admissions mentioning alcohol with increases in the number of people citing opiates other than heroin and methamphetamine abuse.
Approximately 7% of Louisiana residents reported past-month use of illicit drugs; the national average was 8%.
Alcohol Addiction in Louisiana
There were 3,584 people who went to rehab for alcohol dependence and 4,132 people who went for alcohol abuse combined with a secondary drug.
Commonly Abused Drugs in Louisiana
In 2007-2008, Louisiana was one of the top ten states for rates in several drug-use categories.
Marijuana
Marijuana is the most commonly cited drug among primary drug rehab admissions in Louisiana, according to the 2010 Treatment Episode Data Set (TEDS) report. There were 6,022 people who went to substance abuse treatment for marijuana that year, 75.6% were males and 24.4% were females. The largest age group in treatment for marijuana abuse was 12-17 years of age with the majority of people being African –American at 57.8%.
Prescription Drugs
There were 3,324 people who went to treatment for opiates other than heroin in 2010. 50.6% were male and 49.4% were female. This figure supports the national epidemic of individuals abusing prescription drugs.
Cocaine
In 2010, 2,859 people went to treatment for smoking cocaine while 939 people went for ingesting cocaine by other means.
Heroin
There were 1,886 individuals admitted into drug rehab for heroin dependence in 2010 which has increased significantly since 2005 at 258 admits into treatment.
Amphetamines
828 people went to substance abuse treatment for amphetamines in 2010. This figure has decreased since 2005, as there were 1,229 admits into treatment for amphetamines.
Louisiana Drug and Alcohol Fatalities, Injuries and Drug Court Statistics
As a direct consequence of drug use, 862 persons died in Louisiana in 2007. This is compared to the number of persons who died in Louisiana from motor vehicle accidents (1,036) and firearms (869) in the same year. Louisiana drug-induced deaths (20.1 per 100,000 population) exceeded the national rate (12.7 per 100,000).
