Illinois Addiction Treatment Statistics

According to the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA), there were 70,378 total admissions to Illinois drug and alcohol rehab centers in 2009. Of those admitted, about two thirds were men and one third were women. Also, about half of those admitted were White and half were African-American.

The National Survey of Substance Abuse Treatment Services report in 2009 reflected that nearly two-thirds of treatment programs offer substance abuse treatment only, while 30% offer a mix of substance abuse and mental health services.

In the most recent government survey, 7.17% of Illinois residents reported using illicit drugs in the past month. The national average was 8.02%. Additionally, 2.95 percent of Illinois residents reported using an illicit drug other than marijuana in the past month (the national average was 3.58%).

Approximately 16% of Illinois drug and alcohol addiction treatment facilities offer detox services.

Alcohol Addiction in Illinois

Alcohol abuse and dependence is third in Illinois of substances abused. In 2009, 12,430 people were admitted for alcohol addiction in Illinois. However, when alcohol is combined with a secondary drug, the total number admitted with alcohol adds an additional 10,506 residents. The majority of those seeking alcohol treatment were male. The ration between men and women admitted for dependence were approximately the same.

Commonly Abused Drugs in Illinois

The majority of those admitted to drug and alcohol rehabs in Illinois in 2009 reported heroin as their primary substance abused, followed by marijuana, and then alcohol.

Cocaine
In 2009, it was reported that 8, 432 people were admitted to drug treatment for smoking cocaine while 1, 626 were admitted for other means than smoking cocaine.

Heroin
Heroin abuse and addiction continues to be a major problem in Illinois. There were a reported 19,245 people who entered treatment in 2009 for heroin dependence, 58.8% being male and 41.2% being female.

Marijuana
Marijuana is the most widely available and the most widely used illicit drug in Illinois. Illinois marijuana use is of great concern among high school students, with 36% of 12th graders reporting lifetime marijuana use to the Office of National Drug Control Policy (ONDCP) in 2006. Even more alarmingly, children in middle school are reporting increasingly high usage of marijuana, with 14.5% of 8th graders reporting lifetime use in 2006.

Prescription Drugs
The most popularly abused pharmaceuticals are hydrocodone products. OxyContin is also highly abused in Illinois, but there seems to be a shift from OxyContin abuse to methadone abuse due to increased media attention (ONDCP). Survey data from 2006 showed that 30% of students reported abusing pain pills. In 2009, people admitted into drug treatment for other opiates were 1, 668 while 50.4% were male and 90.5% were White.

Methamphetamines
Methamphetamine in Illinois is of principle concern in the rural areas of the state. In 2009, there were 1,001 people who went to treatment for amphetamine dependence. The production of meth involves any number of toxic chemicals such as paint thinner, acetone, and battery acid. Large quantities of methamphetamines are also transported into Illinois through Mexico.

During 2006, there were 112,368 Illinois drug arrests. As of April 2007, there were 20 drug courts in Illinois with an additional 8 more in the planning.

During 2006, there were 778 Illinois methamphetamine laboratory incidents reported, according to the Office of National Drug Control Policy (ONDCP).

Approximately one third of all federally sentenced drug cases in Illinois in 2006 involved cocaine (ONDCP). Cocaine in Illinois continues to be readily available, especially in its powder form. Approximately, one-third of all drug cases in the court system involved powdered cocaine. There were 7,000 cultivated marijuana plants eradicated or seized in 2006 by the DEA.The number of methamphetamine lab seizure incidents in the state of Illinois increased 9 percent, from 364 incidents in 2007 to 395 incidents in 2009.
