Florida Addiction Treatment Statistics

In 2009, the government's lead agency on substance abuse, SAMHSA, reported a total of 79,322 admissions into Florida alcohol and drug rehabilitation centers. Of that number, 61.7% were male and 38.3% female.

Drug admissions for treatment have increased from 21% in 1992 to 46% in 2006. For all those seeking comprehensive treatment, the National Survey of Substance Abuse Treatment Services reported that in 2006, only 228 facilities of all the treatment programs in the state offered some type of residential care.

Alcohol Addiction in Florida

Alcohol was the most commonly cited abused substance in the state for the number of people being admitted for addiction treatment. In 2009, 13,953 people were admitted for alcohol addiction as the primary abused substance and an additional 8,399 people were admitted to an alcohol rehabs for alcohol dependence combined with a secondary substance.

Commonly Abused Drugs in Florida

Florida, due to its prime location, remains a main international drug trafficking and money laundering site with cocaine and heroin as the main commodities. In 2009-2010, Florida became the leading Pill Mill state in the country.

Cocaine
Cocaine is the primary drug threat in Florida and is available throughout the entire state. Between 2005 and 2006, 390,000 Floridians reported using cocaine. In 2009, 7,701 people were admitted to drug abuse treatment programs for smoking cocaine. There was an additional 3,815 individuals admitted for cocaine addiction who ingested cocaine through other means than smoking it.

Heroin
Unlike many other states in the nation, Florida does not have a major heroin abuse problem. The vast majority of heroin entering Florida is being transported to markets outside of the state. In 2009, 1,721individuals, a comparatively small number of individuals for the national trend, entered treatment for heroin addiction.

In 2007, 24,812 Florida residents were admitted to drug and alcohol addiction rehabs for marijuana dependence

Prescription Drugs
Florida has experienced “unprecedented increases in levels of abuse” for prescription medication. 12,756 people were admitted for opiate addiction other than heroin, in 2009. Hydrocodone and OxyContin continued to be a serious problem in Florida for both trafficking and using. 777,000 citizens in Florida reported using prescription drugs for non-medical use in the year 2005-2006.

Florida Drug and Alcohol Fatalities, Injuries and Drug Court Statistics

With over 8000 miles of coastline, drug traffickers are provided with a lot of opportunity to smuggle drugs into the country. The Florida Medical Examiners report that five people in Florida die daily as a direct result of prescription drug overdose.

DEA reports indicate that MDMA (Ecstasy)  is “the most readily available dangerous drug throughout Florida”. It can be found at clubs and rave parties throughout the state. 81,197 dosage units of MDMA were seized by DEA in 2007. In 2006, there 67 deaths were related to MDMA and 4 deaths were related to GHB.

7,068.5 kilograms of marijuana were seized by federal agents in 2007 and 46,526 cultivated plants were eradicated by the DEA.

Crack cocaine continues to be heavily trafficked throughout the state. In 2007 the DEA seized 5,660.4 kilograms of cocaine in Florida. In the first half of 2007 1,008 people were found to have cocaine in their bodies at the time of death. In 2006, a total of 2,052 deaths were related to the presence of cocaine in the body at the time of death.

Methamphetamine can be found in all of Florida’s 67 counties. There was an increase of 148% from 128 meth lab seizures from 128 incidents in 2007 to 318 incidents in 2009. There were 117 deaths related to methamphetamine in 2006. The DEA seized 19.5 kilograms of Methamphetamine in 2007.

Florida has the third oldest drug court program in the country which started in the early 1990s. As of 2007, Florida had 92 functioning drug courts. Almost 45 % of all drug cases in drug court involved powdered cocaine.

In total there were 155,246 adult drug arrests in Florida that same year with an additional 2,590 DEA Florida arrests.

Between 2005 and 2006, 1.2 million Floridians (8% of the resident population) reported use of an illicit drug.

In 2006, 96 deaths were heroin related.

In 2006 there were 731 deaths related to hydrocodone. In the first half of 2007, there were 380 deaths related to hydrocodone. 2006 government reports indicated that there were 923 oxycodone related deaths and in the first half of 2007, there were 568 deaths related to oxycodone.
