As great as a country we live in, there are so many times we say one thing but seem to do another. Perfect examples are eating disorders as they relate to food and weight. We, as Americans, give the word "thin" incredible power and meaning, yet all we hear day after day is how there appears to be an epidemic relating to weight gain or obesity. The drive to be thin, or what we believe thin to be, is the foundation upon which eating disorders are given birth.
This does not mean that everyone who is overweight and concerned about losing weight has an eating disorder. We should be concerned about our weight for reasons concerning health, self esteem and general appearance, but individuals suffering from eating disorders take this concern to an entirely different level. Men and women with eating disorders become obsessed with losing weight, willing to adopt any measure to reach their desired goal. This may include starving oneself, purging, laxatives, diuretics or even turning to amphetamines to curb one's appetite. Each of these methods to control food intake or lose weight can be life threatening on their own and rarely produce the desired results.
For high quality treatment of all types of eating disorders, such as anorexia treatment or bulimia treatment, call us at 1-800-993-3869 now. We Will Help! Call Now!
Why is Eating Disorder Treatment So Important?
Over the years, eating disorder treatments have made great differences in the lives of men and women throughout the United States. However, eating disorders are far less likely to be treated than say drug addiction or alcoholism. This is unfortunate because, as with drug addiction or alcoholism, if the individual does not receive eating disorder treatment, the eating disorder will continue to progress over time with serious medical and psychological consequences. A therapist who specializes in eating disorders in a well known eating disorder treatment center stated she believes that ten percent of the men and women suffering from anorexia nervosa progress to the point of suicide or death from other medical complications sometimes brought on by starvation.
Untreated eating disorders can have monumental health problems. Centers which specialize in eating disorders report that patients who enter eating disorder treatment often have been diagnosed with esophageal deterioration, dental problems and tooth decay, anemia, high blood pressure, diabetes and heart problems. Patients may experience loss of hair and women may stop menstruating. One common misconception is that eating disorders are limited to women. While the large majority of people with eating disorders are women, eating disorders can and do affect men.
Another reason it is essential for individuals with eating disorders to seek out proven eating disorder treatment is that they may have an accompanying psychiatric disorder such as a mood disorder, depression, major depression, bipolar disorder, Post Traumatic Stress Disorder or anxiety disorder. As with the individual who has a dual diagnosis involving drugs or alcohol, an eating disorder may be the cause of the psychiatric problem or the individual may have used the eating disorder to cope with an existing psychiatric condition. This is something effective eating disorder treatment centers can uncover and treat.
Eating Disorder Treatment; Does It Really Make a Difference?
Eating disorder treatment can make a positive difference in any person's life. The key to treating eating disorders is the patient’s willingness to trust and surrender some of their control. Due to the obsession and craving to binge, purge or restrict, most individuals with eating disorders respond better in residential eating disorder treatment centers. Residential centers help patients manage these behaviors on an extended basis, providing round-the-clock medical and psychiatric support, evaluation and intervention.
Residential Treatment for Eating Disorders
Residential eating disorder treatment is where an individual resides in a treatment center overnight. Any reputable eating disorder treatment program will provide the patient with 24 hour nursing, a board certified physician and psychiatrist. The clinicians should have a minimum of a master's degree from an accredited college or university and experience in the field of eating disorder treatment. Additional services should include:
- Nutritional and dietary counseling
- Group and Individual Therapy
- Trauma Resolution Therapy
- Body Image Therapy
- Family Recovery Program
- Relapse Prevention Program
- Aftercare Program
- Recreation Class and many more...
Research has demonstrated, the earlier in life an individual seeks out residential treatment for eating disorders, the better the likelihood of recovery.
