Demerol is a Schedule 2 Narcotic. Demerol is in the same category as codeine, morphine and heroin. It is an extremely dangerous and addictive drug. Demerol, also known as meperidine, is similar to other opiates such as Vicodin, Dilaudid and OxyContin. It is found in pill form and syrup is only legally available through prescription.
Physically and emotionally addictive, Demerol not only blocks pain, it produces a delightful feeling that people continue to try and recreate. This euphoric feeling is rarely recreated, but the Demerol addict continues to try and ”find it” by increasing the amount of Demerol they are using and the frequency in which they use it. Unfortunately, the only thing they manage to create is a greater tolerance to the drug, as well as, an addiction.
The Process of Demerol Addiction
- Demerol is prescribed by a doctor for legitimate pain
- Pain relief is achieved
- Euphoric effect on brain occurs
- Initial euphoric effect becomes harder to achieve
- More and more Demerol is needed to relieve pain
- A tolerance and addiction occurs
Effects of Demerol Addiction
Whether it is due to the reduction in pain or an elevation in pleasurable feelings, the Demerol user begins to take additional Demerol independent of the physician who prescribed the medication. This abuse almost always leads to a mental obsession regarding Demerol and a craving for more.
As Demerol use increases, so will the physical symptoms associated with its abuse. .These symptoms include, but are not limited to:
- Constipation
- Sweats
- Nausea
- Loss of concentration
- Dizziness
- Drowsiness
- Dry mouth
People have also been known to take narcotics or opiates to deal with emotional problems. The same holds true with Demerol. The only thing narcotics, opiates or Demerol provides for emotional difficulties is to “mask or numb” the actual feeling. Although the person may not experience the feeling or focus on the problem at a particular moment in time, everything is just exasperated by not learning how to effectively solve the problem or communicate how one is actually feeling.
Consequences of Demerol Addiction
Demerol, is physically addictive and should not be discontinued abruptly.. Seizures or convulsions may occur if the use of Demerol is dramatically reduced or eliminated. It is for this reason, that withdrawal from Demerol should be gradual, performed in one of many residential treatment programs, under strict medical supervision. Some people take between 20 and 30 pills daily. Demerol can also be injected. Regardless of how Demerol enters the system vomiting, diarrhea, restlessness, insomnia, muscle and bone pain are often experienced by those undergoing withdrawal.
In addition to the physical addiction created by Demerol abuse, it is not uncommon for addicts to experience the following:
- Financial difficulties
- Personal relationship issues
- Employment difficulties
- Legal problems
- Adverse psychological effects
Demerol Addiction Treatment
In the first phase of treatment, the symptoms associated with Demerol withdrawal are managed. This is usually accomplished in approximately 7 days. During this same period of time the addict is evaluated bother medically and psychologically. Any issue that needs to be addressed, is begun at this time.
After the addict is medically stable, they are generally referred to residential treatment to complete the treatment plan designed in detox. Recovery in a supportive therapeutic environment allows the addict to concentrate on issues directly relating to their recovery. The length of stay in one of these residential treatment centers is approximately twenty days and may be followed by outpatient therapy. During this time, the psychological effects of addiction are brought into focus, allowing emotional healing to begin for the addict, as well as those affected by the abuse.
