Darvocet Addiction
Darvocet Tablets

Darvocet is a narcotic opioid drug that treats acute and chronic pain and was banned by the FDA in 2010. Propoxyphene, the primary ingredient in Darvocet, was indicated in a number of suicides and also in accidental deaths due to cardiac irregularities. It is both addictive and toxic and as many doctors have indicated, not a very effective pain reliever. Removal of the FDA approval was based on clear evidence of an increased risk of death from cardiac arrhythmias when using the drug. It had been used in the United States for over 50 years. European countries outlawed the drug in 2009.

Propoxyphene (the main ingredient in Darvocet and Darvon) was combined with acetaminophen (which can cause liver damage) to relieve moderate pain. It is also considered a central nervous system depressant. Structurally it is related to methadone. Extended use of propoxyphene causes physical and psychological addiction.

What is Darvocet Addiction?

A drug, regardless of whether it is a stimulant, a depressant, or an opiate will have a profound influence upon the brain. The brain's ability to communicate and control the operation of bodily functions is diminished. Once the body develops a tolerance for Darvocet or a Darvocet addiction, the drug will be needed by the body and more of the drug will be used. It has already been noted that Darvocet is not viewed as an effective pain reliever, but that does not diminish the drug's powerful potential for addiction and other side effects.

Tolerance means the addiction has taken hold and use must continue at increasing dosages. Darvocet addiction begins through misuse of an old prescription or through non-medical use, Darvocet withdrawal symptoms will begin when one abruptly stop too quickly without being properly detoxed. This action is never recommended for any narcotics, a gradual reduction of the medication is the safest and most comfortable method of drug cessation. Ideally, this reduction will be monitored by a medical addiction professional and medications for the treatment of opiate addiction is administered in a medical detox facility.

Symptoms of Darvocet Addiction and Withdrawal

Regardless of the drug, addiction is addiction. This means that for each class of drugs the symptoms of abuse and addiction have considerable overlap. Sometimes, the drug will have its own set of symptoms. Darvocet is an opiate and will create many of the standard symptoms of detox other opiates and central nervous system depressants create.

A Darvocet addict may have delusions of grandeur accompanied by extended periods of sleep. Of course the most basic sign of addiction is the preoccupation with running out of the drug. This preoccupation arises because of the ever changing tolerance levels and the withdrawal symptoms that happen because of with the need to increase the dosages.

Part of Darvocet addiction is the absolute need to obtain the drug combined with the inability to stop drug seeking behaviors regardless of one’s desires. Tapering off is very difficult, if not impossible, once addiction has taken hold without professional specialized addiction treatment. Treatment is needed to break out of the cycle of addiction.

Long-term sobriety requires a strong commitment to follow a recovery plan. A medically monitored Darvocet detox is the first step in the recovery process which recaptures the health of the body, the mind and the emotions.

Once drugs and alcohol have been removed from the body, during the detox process, the addict will immediately need to address how his or her addiction developed, why the addiction developed, what personal responsibility was involved in the addiction, what environmental and familial dynamics contributed to the development of the addiction, and what actions the addict must take to handle future situations and avoid a drug relapse.
