What is Compulsive Overeating Disorder?

Compulsive overeating disorder, sometimes referred to as binge eating, is a term that is best defined as uncontrolled, emotional overeating. Compulsive overeating does not begin all at once. As with most compulsive behaviors, such as drug addiction, it takes on a progressive nature; starting slowly at first then progressing into full blown binges.

Compulsive overeating generally begins in a person's childhood. While most just think the child is eating too much and getting fat, the truth is that he or she is eating when they experience certain feelings such as fear, anger, guilt or sadness. Once they learn that food can ease or cover up the feelings they experience, they begin to use food as a mechanism to control emotions. Used long enough and frequently enough, this compulsive, emotional overeating becomes as much a part of their coping skills as clear communication is to the average person. The only difference is that compulsive overeating is destructive and has severe consequences.
