California Addiction Treatment Statistics

Approximately 9% of California residents reported past-month use of illicit drugs According to the Treatment Episode Data Set (TEDS), there were 181,386 people who went to drug and alcohol treatment in California in 2009.  Approximately 9% of California residents reported past-month use of illicit drugs; the national average was 8%.

According to the annual National Survey of Substance Abuse Treatment Services (N-SSATS), the number of treatment facilities in California recognized or certified by the Single State Agency has increased from 1,772 in 2002, to 1,820 in 2006.

Since 2002, there has been a steady increase in the annual number of admissions to treatment in California, from approximately 154,000 in 2002 to more than 183,000 in 2005 (the most recent year for which data is available).

Alcohol Addiction in California

Until the 2005-2006 surveys, rates of alcohol abuse or dependence in California were at or below the national average for all age groups. In 2005-2006; however, the percentage of the population abusing alcohol (age 26 and older) placed California among the 10 highest states in the country.

In 2009, 23,284 people entered alcohol rehab and an additional 19,832 people who went to treatment for alcohol combined with a secondary drug.

Commonly Abused Drugs in California

Cocaine
According to TEDS, there were 23,284 people who entered treatment for smoking cocaine and an additional 2,903 who went for ingesting cocaine by other means.

Heroin
28,404 people went to drug treatment for heroin dependence.  69.6% were male and 30.3% were female.  The largest age group in treatment for heroin addiction was 46-50 year olds.

Marijuana
34,597 people were admitted into treatment for abusing marijuana in 2009, according to TEDS.  At 50.2%, 12-17 year olds entered treatment.  70.5% were male and 29.5% were female.

Amphetamines
There were 49,422 people who went to drug rehab in 2009 for amphetamine dependence.  55.1% males and 44.8% females were admitted in 2009.  The majority of those admitted for amphetamine addiction were 26-30 year olds.

Prescription Drugs
55% of males went to treatment for opiates not including heroin while 44.5% were female.  The largest age group admitted for prescription drug abuse was 21-25 year olds.

California Drug and Alcohol Fatalities, Injuries and Drug Court Statistics

As a direct consequence of drug use, 4,178 persons died in California in 2007. This is compared to the number of persons in California who died from motor vehicle accidents (4,306) and firearms (3,268) in the same year. California drug-induced deaths (11.4 per 100,000 population) were lower than the national rate (12.7 per 100,000).

The amount of cocaine seized along the California portion of the Southwest border has steadily increased over the period 2001 to 2010. While the amount of marijuana seized over time has declined, methamphetamine seizures continue to increase.
