Treatments for Bulimia - Hope, Help and Healing

by Jonathan Huttner

Let us first say that bulimia treatment does work and people do recover from bulimia. Secondly, research has demonstrated the sooner bulimia treatment is initiated, the greater the likelihood of achieving quality recovery. Bulimia is an eating disorder that can have serious consequences if left untreated. There is a tremendous amount of research demonstrating the correlation between bulimia and severe health and emotional consequences if the individual does not take advantage of bulimia treatment right away.

If you are looking for bulimia treatment, call the eating disorder helpline now at 1-800-99-DETOX (1-800-993-3869). The staff at the eating disorder helpline is available 24/7 to help locate a bulimia treatment program for you. All calls are confidential.

What is Bulimia Nervosa?

Bulimia nervosa is characterized by a "binge purge" process, where the individual consumes large amounts of food only to be followed by purging (vomiting, enemas, laxatives or diuretic use). When an individual is resistant to pursuing treatments for bulimia, the behaviors associated with the eating disorder continue to progress, as does the likelihood of developing problems such as: dental damage, gastrointestinal problems, cardiac and kidney damage and the development of mental health problems like bipolar disorder, depression or an anxiety disorder. It is not uncommon for the individual resistant to entering a bulimia treatment program to involve themselves in drug use, alcohol use, self harm (self mutilation) or promiscuous sexual behavior. Each one of these behaviors is used in an attempt to mask the pain associated with bulimia nervosa.

Bulimia nervosa is much more prevalent in women than men. It is for this reason many believe bulimia to be a "woman's issue" which deters many men from seeking bulimia treatment. Whether male or female, most individuals experience incredible shame and self loathing after episodes of binging and purging. People suffering from bulimia often believe that if they can just get to their "perfect" number or weight, all will be well. If they can control everything and everyone around them, they will be fine. Unfortunately this never happens, the binge purge process escalates, and the need for treatment becomes even more urgent.

Treatments for Bulimia : What to Look For

It is highly recommended that the bulimia treatment program you choose have a respected medical staff and medical detox program. The medical detox program is not just for the person with bulimia who is addicted to drugs or alcohol. Medical detox assists in the detox of laxatives, diuretics, diet pills or any medications associated with purging oneself of food and calories.

Most individuals entering a bulimia treatment program tend to suffer from one or more psychiatric disorders such as post traumatic stress disorder, mood disorder, major depression or bipolar disorder. For this reason, it is imperative that any bulimia treatment program you are considering have a board certified psychiatrist on staff. The psychiatrist will work in conjunction with the clinical staff in deciding the best way to address any psychiatric disorders coexisting with the eating disorder.

Effective bulimia treatment programs staff a variety of clinicians including nutritionists, licensed psychotherapists, family therapists, recreation therapists, art therapists, discharge planners, social workers, addiction therapists, physicians and nurses.

Bulimia treatment programs should include:

People in need of treatment for bulimia rarely recognize they need help. To someone with bulimia, abstaining from binging and purging means getting fat or out of control -- the bulimics worst nightmare. This type of thinking often causes individuals to resist treatment or leave treatment prematurely. High quality treatments for bulimia include extremely comprehensive family programs that help the person with their long term recovery.
