You hit on a key point here in your post. You started planning your actions and responses for post-treatment phase of your life during treatment, and you made the most of the support from your counselors etc. for this step. I think that's a thing that not too many who are recovering really think to do. It's all about here and now, but few look too far into the future while in the midst of recovery.

Planning ahead, and using your mentors to help you do so, can greatly affect what turn your life takes once you are out of recovery. Why? Because the more aware you are of potential problems, the more likely you are to look out for and avoid them. Working with counselors during that planning process can help bring more potential road blocks or issues to light so that you can effectively avoid them in the future and work toward preventing a relapse into drug addiction.

Kudos to you for realizing that relapse do not have to be a part of recovery. It will no doubt be for some, but there are things you can do to control it and/or avoid it before it happens. As you go through recovery, think not only of the present but also of your plans once you are out of treatment. What do you intend to do? Who do you have to help you? What positive things are you looking forward to? What do you foresee needing help with? Be honest with yourself as you answer these questions, present them and your answers to your counselors and work with them to come up with a plan of action so that you don't become one of the many who are blind-sided by a relapse into drug or alcohol addiction in the future.

Congratulations on staying clean. Whether you know it or not, you're an inspiration to many!

Medical detox programs might be the right way to start out. Having a relapse prevention plan during the holidays (especially early recovery), is a great precursor to take.

One day at a time indeed.

I got clean with a 12 step program. Treatment and rehab is great for getting some time off the streets, but recovery happens when your back in the real world and meetings were my life line. Thanks for sharing

Drug treatment centers are a great way to kickstart your recovery. Therapists and counselors provide the patients with a balanced, unbiased outlook they probably wouldn't have with some close friends.

Take care.

thanks for the post.
Yes, I agree. Whether or not someone is just getting sober or many years down the path, finding activities to keep your body and mind from focusing on drugs and alcohol, or the 'isms' that are associated w/this disease are imporant aspects.

Yes, yes, yes it was one of the best treatment centers in USA. But who really knows Allen Bombart, also knows he never will give up his dream! He knows the pain of an addict and he definitely knows which are the best ways to help. He will rise again, I know it!!!
God is on your side Allen!

The first step about quitting for good is "making up your mind".... I know its not as easy as it sounds but that's just the scope. I really don't buy the idea of you avoiding the company of those who fall victim of addiction.... No, that isn't how to eliminate the terror of been addicted. That only shows you aren't prepared to quit. perhaps, you think while in their company, you would be tempted to try it once more.If you run now, you run forever. Never mind if you are the only one that thinks addiction isn't fare... always face it at any circumstances.Stick to your point at anytime... then, you are a winner. If you do have friends that are addicted, get close to them (that is, if you wish them a better life)...
