Tiger Woods Relapse Prevention

Posted by: city boy In: relapse prevention

It appears that Tiger Woods is starting to get himself ready to return to golf.  Everyone who suffers from any type of addiction has to at some point in time get back to their life.  The trick when recovering from addiction is to figure out a way to not relapse.  I have been in recovery for some time now and have learned that there is really no secret to staying sober.  Anyone I know that has quality long term sobriety keeps their recovery pretty simple by doing just a few things:

1. Go to twelve step meetings.

2. Work through the twelve steps with a sponsor.

3. Help another addict.

It really does not have to be rocket science to stay sober no matter who you are.  In Tiger Woods case he has an uncanny, one of a kind way of focusing on the golf course.  If he is able to apply half of that focus into his relapse prevention plan I believe that he is going to be fine.  He needs to do his best to ignore all the negative media and concentrate on the task at hand.  I think Tiger getting back to golf could help his recovery as long as he surrounds himself with the right people.  In recovery it is important to put yourself around people who are honest and doing the right thing.  Like the old saying goes, “we are the company we keep”.

Just like anyone else who is early recovery from addiction whether it be sex, drugs or alcohol Woods is going to have highs and lows.  He is human.  Of course he is one of the most public figures in the world and that is going leave him to criticism from the public making it harder to work on himself but I believe he is completely capable of staying sober from his addiction.  All he has to do is focus on the prize.  Just like he does when he is driving the green on a par 4 hole.
