Alcoholism and Bulimia Nervosa – Polar Opposites
TweetPosted by: drp In: Eating Disorders
It is well documented that many women who enter treatment for eating disorders are also abusing other substances. Those substances are primarily those which eliminate the desire to eat such as; cocaine, crystal meth, amphetamines or other appetite supresants. While it is imperative the drug abuse problem be addressted during treatment for eating disorders, it is rare an alcohol problem will appear as well. Alcohol produces weight gain, which is the opposite of what the person in treatment for eating disorders, more specifically bulimia nervosa, wants to experience. This does not mean the person with bulimia nervosa will not drink alcohol, just that it is rare they will choose it over appetite supressant drugs.
