People in recovery who suffer a relapse do not get drunk or high all of a sudden. There are warning signs that come prior to the alcoholic or drug addict actually picking up a drink or a drug. One of the keys to staying sober is being able to recognize and then manage relapse warning signs. In most cases more then one warning sign will exist. Below you will find some relapse prevention tips.
1. One of the best ongoing relapse prevention plans is to develop a strong support group of people who know you well. They will let you know when you are slipping and will be able to identify if you are not being yourself.
2. If you are craving drugs or alcohol but haven’t yet “picked up” let someone know. The best way to avoid a relapse is share with others about the cravings that are being experienced.
3. When you feel like using go to a twelve step support group. This is one of the main purposes for these meetings. When cravings exist it can be extremely helpful to be around individuals who can relate to the feeling.
4. Don’t isolate!!!!! A sure fire way to get inside your brain is spending to much time alone. Even though you may not feel like it force yourself to be around other people who know and support your recovery.
5. Do not become complaisant. Even if you do not feel like using drugs or alcohol and think that your addiction is under control don’t stop going to meetings, working with your sponsor and spending time with your support group.
Even though relapse is a common occurrence it is not required. It is wise to spend time while in addiction treatment working on the underlying causes that lead to addiction. Once a good relapse prevention plan is put into place and followed it is not that hard to maintain. Without a definitive relapse prevention plan in place it is going to be extremely difficult to remain sober.
