Superbowl Relapse Prevention Tips
Posted by: brian@recoveryconnection.org In: relapse prevention
This year the Superbowl is being held in one of the biggest party cities in the country. All week long on the television celebrities have been spotted partying and having a good time. South Florida has a very large population for recovering drug addicts and alcoholics. All the hoopla and excitement of the Superbowl could be a possible relapse trigger for someone who is in recovery.
Alcoholism and drug addiction are very serious diseases. It is pertinent for individuals who suffer from the disease of addiction to treat their sobriety carefully. No matter how much clean time someone has they are never above a relapse. Superbowl Sunday and beer go hand in hand. If you are in recovery from drug addiction and alcohol abuse it is crucial that you treat this day with care. Here are a few tips to get through the day safe and sober if you are in recovery:
1. make sure you get to a twelve step meeting during the day before the game.
2. watch the game with at least one friend that is also in recovery (support is always good)
3. Give your sponsor a call at some point during the game.
4. Take a moment to reflect to when you were in active addiction. If you are in recovery things must not have been going to well.
5. If at anytime you feel uncomfortable leave the party or wherever you are watching the game. Better safe then sorry right?
6. Remember, it’s just another day!!!! Just because there is a big game on doesn’t mean you have to drink or use drugs. Who knows, you might actually enjoy remembering the game the next morning.
