Mo’Nique Shares Win with Abuse Victims

Posted by: Sobriety Diva In: Women's Treatment Programs

I wouldn’t be the Sobriety Diva if I didn’t first say Mo’Nique looked FABULOUS walking the red carpet after she won the Golden Globe for Best Supporting Actress in a Drama for her role in Precious: Based on the Novel Push by Sapphire.

During her acceptance speech, Mo’Nique had this to say:

“I celebrate this award with all the Preciouses, with all the Marys — I celebrate this award with every person that’s ever been touched,” she said. “It’s now time to tell. And it’s okay.”

For those who aren’t familiar with the movie, Precious is the oft horrifying tale of a black, 350-pound, HIV-positive, 16-year-old rape and incest victim, named Precious and her alcoholic mother,Mary played by Monique. Mo’Nique did a great job of showing that the humanity of a inhumane character.  Those who suffer trauma abuse often turn to drugs and alcohol as a way to cope from the depression and feelings of anxiety that can manifest. The victims of the drug and alcohol abuse are usually those they love the most, their children.

If you are someone or someone you love is using alcohol or drug abuse as a coping mechanism and you are ready for help, give us a call 1-800-391-4309.

*Updated* I added the video of the acceptance speech*
