Being a drug addict in recovery I must admit that I like watching movies about drugs.  Maybe it is because I can live vicariously through the characters.  Maybe it is because most of these movies have the main character dying a miserable death and I need to be reminded why I went to addiction treatment to clean my act up.  Here is a list of my top ten all time drug movies:

1.

Scarface

- I mean come on.  Its the story of the fall of a man living the “american dream”.  It shows what cocaine addiction is capable of and if you watch it enough there are some pretty funny lines.

2.

Easy Rider

A great movie that shows the troubling road that addiction and dealing can lead one down.  It will make a grown man cry.

3.

Up In Smoke

This movie is just funny.  What stoner can’t relate to this one?

4.

Blow

A true story!!!! This guys life would get better and then he would fall again when he started up with his old habits.

5.

A Clock Work Orange

This is just a dark movie about a life that has gone completely out of control as a result of drug abuse.

The Doors

Another true story on how drug addiction ruined a life.  Poor Jim.  He had all the talent in the world.  Addiction treatment could have really helped him.

7.

Rush

This poor cop couldn’t get his act together and it cost him his life.  Not only that but he nearly caused the life of the one he loved.  Great story that shows a good description of a full blown addict and the extent he will go to.

Basketball Diaries

If this kid wasn’t using drugs and alcohol to mask whatever feelings he was going through then I don’t know what he was trying to do.

Permanent Midnight

More wasted talent.  The story of a tragic life with a heroin addiction.

10.

Requim For A Dream

A tough one for me to get through.  Pretty graphic picture about crystal meth.  This whole movie is just one big accident after another that no one has control over because of drug addiction.

There you have it!! An addicts top ten favorite movies.  Looking at the least myself they all have a common theme and the pretty much the same ending.  All of these movies end in death or jail.  I suppose I watch them as a reminder of what drug addiction can lead to.
