My Treatment Experience
Posted by: brian@recoveryconnection.org In: Addiction Treatment| Drug Addiction
Upon entering treatment for my drug addiction I was very skeptical. My initial thought process was that I was going to take the next twenty eight days to relax and my life would naturally get better. Fortunately being at a quality treatment program I was not allowed to just “chill out”. I was given tools that would set a foundation for a long lasting, successful recovery. Working individually with therapist and certified addiction professionals and being a participant in group therapy allowed me to process what had caused my addiction as well as the actions I was going to need to take in order to remain sober.
Addiction treatment provided a safe haven for me to take a good look at myself. Why did I abuse drugs? What feelings and emotions was I trying to hide from? How am I going to stay sober? Who will help me stay sober? These questions and more were all answered during my treatment experience.
In my humble opinion one of the keys to having a positive experience in treatment was letting my guard down. It allowed me to start thinking with an open mind and more importantly I started to let people who wanted to help me into my world. It was in treatment that I realized for the first time in a long time I was not alone. There were people who genuinely wanted to help me as well as individuals who were experiencing the same internal pain I was.
I will be the first to say that addiction treatment was just the first step in getting sober and that I would not have stayed sober without some of the steps I took after attending treatment. Like a building a good house, a strong recovery needs to have a solid foundation. Addiction treatment provided me with that strong foundation to build my recovery on.
