Drug addiction or drug abuse has existed for years. For a good portion of that time many in the country denied the devastation caused by drug addiction and alcoholism. Today, thru education and media coverage the prevalence of drug addiction has risen to the front page.

 One of the issues brought forward is how difficult it is to recover from drug addiction. Even though some Christian drug rehab centers “guarantee” the patient’s success, when you look at their rate of recovery it is no better than any other Christian drug rehab center. Because addiction is defined as a disease of the brain by the American Medical Association and American Society of Addiction Medicine how can any Christian drug rehab center guarantee recovery. Can a hospital guarantee recovery from diabetes or cancer? No they can treat those diseases with the hopes the patient will recover, but will never state they can guarantee their recovery.

 Based on this philosophy, the idea of guaranteeing recovery is on the same as marketing a “cure” for drug addiction and alcoholism. We know that no disease can be cured. The individual with the disease can go into remission and live symptom free, but they will be required to maintain their healthcare or continuing care plan to remain symptom free. In the world of a Christian drug rehab center we use the terminology, to avoid relapse. A cure or guarantee means the recovering person can reinstate any behavior or thought process without fear of returning to drug or alcohol use again. Nothing could be farther from the truth.
