Willingness to Recover From Alcoholism and Drug Abuse

Posted by: joanna@recoveryconnection.org In: Addiction Treatment| Alcoholism| Drug Abuse| Drug Addiction| Lakeview Health Systems| Steppping Stone Center| Substance Abuse

Willingness is a major factor in recovery from any type of addiction. Many times a person who is alcoholic or drug addicted says “I am willing to get help” and the next thing family, friends and loved ones know is he or she is doing the same thing drinking and drugging. Being honest with him or her-self is the first step in a long process of willingness. The next hurdle is “taking action” doing whatever he or she can do to get better. Having the open mindedness to “trust” someone other than themselves to show them the way, to “follow” the path that was laid out for him or her.

It takes courage “to believe” in someone other than him or her. To have the willingness to step out in “faith” and get help in anyway possible. Alcoholism and drug abuse is prominent now more than ever. Life stressors have been magnified if he or she used alcohol or drugs 2 years ago as a coping mechanism, most likely today he or she is now living life to drink or drug. As the economy has spiraled so has the disease people are finding they are controlled by alcoholism and drug addiction.  Addiction treatment programs allow individuals the opportunity to gain a foundation of recovery so that when they transition back home again life is manageable and new coping skills are in place.
