Treatment for Substance Abuse Not Complete for Gays

Posted by: jhutt In: Gay Friendly Addiction Programs

When looking for treatment for substance abuse I made the mistake of not looking closely enough into the actual services being provided. While they had a psychiatrist and licensed clinical staff to deal with my depression and drug addiction they were really limited to dealing with issues relating to gay men. Later on, I found that very few centers providing treatment for substance abuse actually provided treatment for sexual orientation, coming out, homophobia or sex addiction. Leaving treatment with all of these issues exposed but not really addressed ended in a 5 year relapse which almost killed me.

I was a lucky one as I survived and found help and managed to get treatment for my substance abuse in a place called Freedom Rings, a gay drug rehab which was incorporated with a traditional heterosexual rehab. It was totally cool and I left feeling more complete as a person than ever. Thank you to the staff at Freedom Rings.
