Addiction comes in many forms, such as drugs and alcohol, addictions to behaviors, like eating disorders, and more. Individuals turn to things outside of themselves as a way not to think or feel. The temporary relief found in avoiding the pain eventually becomes more complicated and more painful then the initial pain. The patterns are self destructive and cause much pain to both the individual addicted and the ones closet to them.
The signs of an addiction are different for each addiction. There are some general warning signs to be aware of in any addiction. Cravings or compulsion, having loss of control once the behavior starts not able to stop, and also when he or she continues the addiction even with severe consequences he or she still uses. The amount of time invested in thinking about using, getting more, and using is all very damaging to him or her and definitely the family.
Lying, cheating and stealing are all behaviors of addiction whether a food addict, compulsive overeater, alcoholic or drug abuse. We lie to people closet to us and we lie to ourselves in order to keep doing the behavior. There is guilt and shame involved and a lot of energy in covering up.
