Everyday people call looking for help either for him or her or for a loved one. Some individuals really do want help and are entirely willing to do whatever he or she needs to do to get better. Other people are looking for help because of his or her family telling them to. Maybe his or her employer has confronted them and said get help or you no longer have a job. Sometimes his or her children beg and plead for them to get help. Whatever and whoever is the motivating factor for the call, until the person wants help and is willing to get help it is not going to be effective.

There is a saying in recovery groups when the student is ready the teacher will appear. What that means for most people is when they are ready to get help and reach out for help this is willingness to get batter and recovery from the disease of addiction. Willingness is the key to someone getting recovery from alcoholism, drug addiction, eating disorders, mental illness the list goes on. Willingness opens the door to change and change is what has to happen if people are going to be different and have a new opportunity to a life free from addictions.

What are some factors that show willingness? Honesty is an act of willingness, doing the actions necessary to change the behavior, trusting someone else and releasing the false illusion of control and power. Being willing to follow suggestions, believing it is possible to be clean and sober free from active addiction, joining a support group. The big one is being willing to help other people to not only think of himself or herself. Help is available when the person wants help all they have to do is call.
