Sexual identity is an essential part of understanding just who you are as a person. Just as with gender, age or appearance sexual identity allows you to form self awareness and dictates how you express yourself to others. It is important to remember that you are made up of many parts and your sexual identity is no more important than any other part. Those people that you come in contact with on a daily basis, friends and family, usually disregard your sexual identity.
Sexual identity, sexual orientation and your sexual practices make up your sexuality When we are attracted to someone sexually that defines your orientation; it could be someone of the opposite sex, someone of the same sex or both sexes. The sexual activity itself or what you enjoy physically when you are with someone is your sexual practices. Time has a way of changing us and all parts of your sexuality are susceptible to change.
Society has a way of labeling people according to their initial sexual identity. The categories of gay and lesbian or bisexual and heterosexual can be unfair. People should have the right to identify themselves as they see themselves not by some biased misconception of the media. People shouldn’t be locked into any persona that doesn’t allow for sexual identity to change through their lives.
People can become uncomfortable with their own sexuality; they become confused and ashamed; afraid to talk about their confusion with anyone. Many women end up in treatment program or drug rehab center ; unable to come to terms with a sexual identity crisis they develop an addiction or eating disorder to hide their feelings. There is help once someone admits to a problem.
