How Do Eating Disorders Begin?
Posted by: joanna@recoveryconnection.org In: Drug Addiction
When I was a young girl eating disorders existed however, the only people it was ever discussed about were models, actors and actresses. Now it seems people of all ages are struggling with an eating disorder. What causes eating disorders? What a loaded question, for some they watched an older sibling, a cousin, aunt some family member who was admired or respected. Individuals learned about it at school during a health class and it sounded like a solution!
How and why are not recovery words, the time wasted trying to figure out the answer could best be spent in getting help! Spend the precious time to get better and have a fresh start with life. Statistically women have eating disorders more than men however; men are also afflicted unfortunately, due to shame, guilt and remorse they don’t typically seek help. As a whole our society has been told through the media, books, movies and magazines and other forms that the individual is not good enough, rich enough, smart enough, there just isn’t enough. I want to suggest that as a society people are enough!
The burden to be perfect must be smashed! If I no longer have to be perfect then he or she no longer needs to be perfect. As a parent the children look to us for guidance, truth, and safety, children think adults have the right answers; it seems at times the children are more together than the adults. Teaching the fundamentals to eat three meals a day, have fruit and vegetables eat more whole grains and so on. This may sound easy enough however, for some individuals this is a struggle.
Today I can offer hope and support and say honestly if an individual wants to get help from an eating disorder they can. Insurance companies do offer benefits that allow for individuals to go to an inpatient eating disorder treatment program. When an individual goes inpatient they allow themselves to get the help and guidance necessary to live a life free from eating disorders.
