Positive Body Image

Posted by: Dan In: Eating Disorders| Women's Treatment Programs

A positive body image can be difficult as a result of the social media and the message infused in our cultural conditioning. Discontent with the way we appear can cause spiritual and physical problems. Searching for happiness through a culturally biased standard of physical attractiveness can result in disordered eating or other negative means of weight control leading to physical complications. Unfortunately looking in the mirror and being satisfied with what we see to a great extent depends on how we think about ourselves and other outside influences.
Positive body image must start with you. Each person must celebrate his or her uniqueness. Wanting to look like someone else is counterproductive; each of our bodies has its own way of developing and differences are what make us all special. Learning to love your self may be good counsel but somewhat simplistic when dealing with a positive body image. You must map out a realistic approach to improve or create a positive body image.
Let’s start with the media. Understanding what is seen on the airwaves, magazines, the internet and especially on fashion runways is a fictional representation of the real world. Before you look in the mirror you must have a positive thought about yourself. Positive affirmations are important they change your mental self-talk. Wear clothing that are comfortable, nothing too tight. Start treating your body to nice things; weekly massages, long oil scented bathes or maybe a facial. A distorted body image is often the result of what your mind sees rather than what you actually look like. Listen to those that care about you, the inside you, and make whatever improvements you deem necessary from the inside out.
