Nervous System and Eating Disorder

Posted by: Dan In: Eating Disorders|Women's Treatment Programs

Nervous System and Eating Disorder may be directly related. Serotonin is the neurotransmitter most associated with feeling good. Of all the chemicals present in the brain, healthy serotonin levels are probably the most important for the maintenance of an overall sensation of well-being. Serotonin also is responsible for storing fat and how your body uses that stored fat. The nervous system regulates how calories are burned during periods of energy producing behavior. The relationship shows how emotions and eating are significantly tied to one another. Either an under or overproduction of this neurotransmitter can influence eating and energy-related behavior.

Nervous System and Eating Disorders help explain the relationship between specific food intake and mood levels. If an eating disorder therapist were to address only the behavior of a sufferer they would most certainly fail. Emotions must be dealt with if there is any hope for success. What we can see is once behavior and emotions are addressed, foods that encourage the production of serotonin must be added to the equation. This article in no way suggests that recovery from an eating disorder is a simple procedure; nothing could be further from the truth. The more we understand how chemicals and emotions interact and affect eating disorders the more we have to offer patients.

Studies show a strong relationship between low serotonin production and characteristics found in people with eating disorders. Problematic eating, poor impulse control, unstable mood and obsessive behavior are present when serotonin levels are altered for any reason. The more we understand how chemicals and emotions interact and affect eating disorders the more we have to offer patients.
