What Is An Eating Disorder?

If an individual is overweight or underweight spending unnecessary time focused on what they can or can’t eat- that maybe an indicator of an eating disorder! Improving an individual’s health through diet and exercise is one thing, to be obsessed and focused on diet and exercise is another. Take an eating disorder quiz and see if any of the questions are appropriate.
After completing the eating disorder quiz the answers fall into the category of an eating disorder then see if the signs and symptoms are also present. If an individual is concerned about his or her own health — or that of a friend or loved one — get to know these common signs and symptoms of eating disorders:
- Significant and rapid weight loss or weight gain
- Obsessive thoughts about food, weight, and appearance
- Binge eating, with or without purging (induced vomiting or laxative use)
- Isolation at mealtimes or frequent disappearances during and or after meals
- Skipping meals or other restrictive behaviors around food
- Over eating
- Frequent weigh-ins on the scale
- Over exercising
- Distancing oneself from loved one’s and friends
- Abuse of laxatives, diuretics, or weight-loss medications
- Avoidance of activities such as social events or sports due to weight concerns
If there are any signs and symptoms recognized in yourself — or if you know someone who is experiencing these symptoms — seek treatment for eating disorders. The right thing to say or do is individual. The best course of action is to take action and get help as soon as possible. There many resources available for eating disorder treatment.
