Starvation dieting, which has been well known in the modeling world for many years, is gaining popularity in other areas of society. This weight loss strategy is also known as the Anorexic Diet. It is incredible to think that anyone would use starvation which is responsible for 25,000 deaths per day as a diet plan. There is no debating that starvation will lead to weight loss but at what cost? There is no lack of family members of young women that can answer that question.
Starvation dieting will send a message to the body that it is being deprived of food; the body in turn will slow down the metabolism in order to reserve stores of fat for self preservation. This cycle dictates that one must starve themselves even more to lose weight. This sever restriction of food intake robs the body of vital nutrients and minerals that results in physical complications and often to a heart attack and death.
Young females on collage campuses across the country experiment with starvation dieting as spring break draws near. The pressure that our society exerts with its priority on good looks (thin) compels these girls to starve to look good in their bikinis. When the vacation is over and they return to normal eating there is a rebound affect when the body stores the food as fat. The weight gain exceeds what was lost leaving the dieter confused and anxious. This situation will not always lead to an eating disorder but in the cases that progress and the cycle continues eating disorder treatment may be necessary to avoid devastating results.
