Male Athletes and Eating Disorders

Male Athletes and Eating Disorders is a topic that is just starting to attract the attention of the general public. Doctors and those in the Mental Health field have warned of the dangers involved in the methods used to achieve a leaner body mass. Until recently weight loss and eating disorder issues were almost exclusively directed at females. Women have been the ones that were more self conscience about body image and therefore more susceptible to disordered eating habits. A study at Reuters University suggests that male athletes have developed eating disorders due to competition and the desire for a leaner body.
Male Athletes and Eating Disorders have caught the attention of the media after recent deaths of wrestlers who developed eating disorders and were taking steroids. Dr. James L. Glazer of the Main Medical Center has seen a significant growth in the numbers of Male Athletes with Anorexia and believes steps should be taken before more deaths occur. As an Athlete loses some weight and his speed increases a cycle of weight loss and better time trials develops the chance of developing an eating disorder addiction increase.
Athletes across the board are engaging in dangerous weight loss behavior and extreme exercise regimes. As athletes become more competitive as a result of these new behaviors it becomes increasingly difficult to persuade them that they are harming themselves. Professional therapists at eating disorder treatment centers must become involved and interventions are necessary to save careers as well as lives.
