Holidays trigger Compulsive Behavior in addicts. This time of the year more than any other is full of land mines of temptations for those that suffer with an addiction to food, drugs and alcohol. The season of temptation starts around Halloween and stretches through the Super Bowl.
There are any number of parties to attend, each offering a great assortment of food and alcoholic beverages meant to raise the seasonal spirit. Each party or gathering comes with a host or hostesses who apply social pressure to insure you eat drink and be merry. As the weather turns cold activities move indoors and food/drink becomes the focal point for social gatherings.
Holidays trigger Compulsive Behavior as emotions run high either due to the merriment of the season or memories from another time. We as a society overindulge to celebrate or to cope with uncomfortable feelings. As the sufferer indulges themselves to escape the addictive process starts anew. Staying away from dangerous places is the responsibility of any addict but social awareness and support are just as important.
Drug Rehab Centers and Eating Disorder Treatment show a marked increase in admissions just prior to and directly after Holidays. The attempts at recovery during the holidays can be bittersweet. Being away from the family this time of year can be difficult but if treatment is successful the effort is well worth the separation. As we raise our social consciousness we can all become more supportive during this season of giving.
