Top 10 Most-Believed Marijuana Myths

Posted by: jhutt In: Drug Addiction

Marijuana predates any recorded history and the cannabis plant has been used, in one form or another, as both a pain reliever and an ingredient in certain teas. Its use also has roots in both spiritual and religious ceremonies throughout history. No one can deny that there has been a spike in recreational use of cannabis over the last 100 years. To this day, the never-ending debate rages on as people are fiercely divided over whether medical use of the drug should be legalized. As anyone who has taken a junior high school health class will tell you, marijuana has been labeled a gateway drug. Recent studies show that marijuana’s illegal status proves to be more of a catalyst for deadlier substances because of the lengths one has to go through to obtain it. This isn’t the only myth surrounding marijuana. Listed below are the top 10 most believed myths as compiled by MedicalCannabis.com:

1. There are hundreds of compounds/chemicals in marijuana-There are approximately 400, compared to a tomato that has roughly 330.

2. It is stronger today which makes it more dangerous- The marijuana has not become stronger.

3. As a plant the dosage cannot be controlled- Prior to the marijuana prohibition when pharmaceutical companies created extracts and tinctures of cannabis, they were able to provide fairly uniform preparations.

4. Smoking marijuana is what makes it dangerous- Higher potency of marijuana will also allow patients to smoke less to achieve a therapeutic dose without the risk of overdose.

5. Marijuana Destroys the immune system- There is no conclusive evidence that demonstrates harm to the immune system when used in therapeutic doses for humans.

6. It is highly addictive- Compared to other commonly used psychoactive drugs, marijuana is not highly addictive and has a low abuse potential.

7. Marijuana is a gateway drug-The 1999 report by the Institute of Medicine finds that, “There is no evidence that marijuana serves as a stepping stone on the basis of its particular drug effect.”

8. Use during pregnancy can cause damage to the fetus- Studies by Melanie Dreher, PhD, RN conducted in Jamaica and Dr. Peter Fried in Canada show minimal effects on the fetus during pregnancy.

9. A marijuana pill is available and completely legal- MarinolÒ is a synthetic form of THC, the pure psychoactive chemical in marijuana.

10. Medical use send the message to teens that it is not dangerous and encourages usage- Reports from teens have indicated that it is easier for them to obtain illegal marijuana than it is to obtain regulated alcohol or prescription drug.

I think you must have had a joint between points 2 and 4 coz you certainly can’t remember that refute a higher potency in point 2 and bestow the benefits of using less due to higher potencies in point 4!!!

Dude – you have to agree to disagree with yourself.

You didn’t debunk the first “myth” at all. You said the myth is that it has hundreds of chemicals, and then debunked it by saying it has hundreds of chemicals. The real problem with the “it has hundreds of chemicals” argument against marijuana is that simply stating that something has hundreds of chemicals tells you absolutely nothing about whether or not it’s safe.
Also, myth 2… I don’t think it can be argued that some of the sweet hybrid strains they’re producing in Amsterdam and elsewhere aren’t stronger than what people commonly smoked before. In myth 4 you directly contradict myth 2 by talking about higher potency bud.
That said, it is one of the safest drugs out there, and absolutely should be legal. Even if were as dangerous as alcohol, the war on drugs is a huge failure that has done more harm than good, and will continue to destroy lives needlessly.

Hi there.

Regarding point 2: Can you site some references that back that up? I’ve read reports that modern cannabis (hybrids in particular) are 75% more potent than the stuff that was smoked in the 60’s.

You have to qualify your statements to make this a legitimate analysis. Simply saying that “The marijuana has not become stronger” doesn’t do anything except state your particular and (most likely) uneducated belief. Instead you should talk about the chemical decomposition of THC over time and how this effects the modern potency tests done on marijuana that has been improperly stored for 30 years.

Smoking weed hasn’t been shown to harm the immune system outside of the obvious damage done to the lungs. Various cannabinoids have recently been tested and have shown remarkable antibacterial properties, especially to strains that have grown resistant to regular antibacterials.

the confusion over number two is explainable simply by grow-practices. Marijuana is not, as an entity, stronger; rather, hybridization and curing practices have allowed adept growers to coax a given plant into producing the maximum possible thc. That is, the chemical has not changed at all, simply the quantity of the chemical present has increased. This does not affect the potential for danger, it just gets you more blazed with less actual plant matter. in the 70s you could get just as high as you can now it would just take smoking more bud.

I am pro marijuana but anti ignorance. if your going to write something like this please site sources. points 2 and 4 contradict each other, and point 2 is absolutely false when you consider improved indoor growing techniques in combination with better genetics of todays strains from years of selective breeding. Articles like this are one of the reasons we have trouble educating the world on the benefits of legalization, please take this disgrace down.

a little biased. Saying there is “no conclusive evidence” FOR ALL THE POINTS REFUTING POT IS JUST IGNORANT. There are two sides to the story and they ignore the bad side saying “no conclusive evidence”. Well not to you if you don’t want there to be. Just give it to me straight.. Ya, pots not that bad… its not that dangerous, BUT.. it does cause some detrimental effects (memory lose, concentration, learning ability, judgement of time, and space). Read between the lines, everyone has there own bias.

it can irritate your throat, but smoking pot isn’t what gets you sick. it would seem that since most people smoke with their friends and even strangers, they’d be more likely to pick up some germs from passing a joint. it’s happened to me before, anyway.

heres my two cents.
its ridiculous to think that the marijuana in the 60s is just as potent as todays marijuana.
i know numerous aging hippies and they’d be happy to agree…
plus people are making more potent forms of marijuana almost on a day to day basis i imagine, and obviously new strands are gonna be more potent then home grown pot of the 60s.
i’d like to see some resources as well

They do not contradict each other.

I can argue that caffeine has not grown stronger (perhaps it has… this is just an example) in the past century, yet espresso, simply a more potent (i.e. concentrated) form of caffeine allows people to drink less and feel the same effect.

Just because there is a more potent or concentrated way of presenting something doesn’t mean it has intrinsically grown more potent.

sigh… and i hate how people always ask for sources… its not like we go though school looking for the sources in our textbooks. and even if we come across one, no one actually goes and checks if its a valid source… we just accept it.

of course on the internet is different. if they had a little section that said ‘Sources: random author of random study’ would that appease you?

As a medical card holder, I also got a little information on the myths of marijuana.

For #1. The negative connotation of the hundreds of chemicals was left out of the myth on number 1 which was the important part and why the chemical amount of tomatos was included.

#2. Marijuana hasnt become stronger, but the chemicals that constitute it have changed in their percentages. Theres less CHB and more THC as well as other percentage changes. But 100% is still 100%.

#3. The dosage can be controlled, the actual percentage of THC is an obtainable figure and from that dosage can be reasoned out. Plus, a .5 to a gram is a dose in about 99% of the cases. More then that will not harm you but make you more loopy.

#4. Stronger **THC** Potency. The important word is missing again. Stronger THC potency allows people to smoke less (inhaling less tar) and allows for alternate intake methods such as eating and vaporizing (both are clean ways of ingesting marijuana)

#5. Marijauna doesn’t destroy the immune sytem, but if you smoke it often enough, and through a non-clean-water percolated pipe, the buildup of tar and mucus in the esophogus can lead to chronic bronchitis (basically, you cough up mucus when a non-smoker wouldnt) Again, can be avoided by eating/vaporizing the drug.

#6. Compared to other chemicals, yes it is less addictive, however, it is somewhat of a psychological addiction. You get bored, so you smoke, blah happens, so you smoke. Same thing as cigs except those are both psychological and physical.

#7. If someone tries other drugs because they smoke weed, its because of two reasons. #1. By making marijuana illegal you force the customers to by it in the black market, where all the other drugs are available and present for them to be tempted by. Legalizing it removes that temptation of presence. #2 By trying marijuana, they realize that everything theyve heard about it is complete bs so that must mean everything they heard about all drugs is complete BS so the only way to find out is to do them.

#8. that ones fine

#9. Marinol also doesn’t work nearly as well at blocking the pain. CHB is the body high agent of marijuana. Thats the actual pain killer part of marijuana, THC is the head high agent. Thats the part that doesnt make you care about the pain thats still there. Its like Nyquil. It doesnt fight the illness, just gets you high so you don’t care.

#10. Because it isn’t dangerous and by lying about it you’re encouraging them to ignore everything else you say about anything.

I don’t have the time list sources but search for yourself and keep in mind that the high THC statistics for modern hybrid marijuana plants come from laboratory precise growing conditions and are tested while completely fresh while the data from the 70’s and 80’s came initially from police seized street pot which wasn’t stored properly for a long time before being tested in the lab. Although many very strong strains exist today with THC content far higher that of the average from past decades, the bulk of seized pot is still ~5% THC, same as always.

#2 and #4 do not contradict yourself, dummies. #2 says pot has not become more potent. #4 is saying that, were marijuana legalized, we could create more potent pot that would reduce the health risks. it is not contradictory to #2 because it is imagining a future scenario where pot is already legal (which means that people who believed in #2 would have already been appeased). so, i’m guessing you guys are all stoned (much like me).

Hey everyone

1. It doesn’t matter how many chemicals, etc., are in it, it matters what’s bad for you and how many there are.

2. Standard run of the mill marijuana (wild or “naturally” grown) hasn’t gotten any better, but modern advances in botany and cross-breeding have created numerous strains of “super weed” with higher concentrations of THC. Pricey, time-consuming, and tedious, but very much worth it. Science rocks.

4. Just about impossible to overdose on THC. Overdose through smoking can only occur if you can smoke roughly a truckload of marijuana; you pass out way before then. Even with Marinol pills you would lose the ability to swallow any more after the effects of the first few pills took place. Smoking actually helps with dosage issues because Marinol is so strong active users find themselves unable to function(like opium).

5. Marjiuana use doesn’t hurt any more than most of the processed food we eat today.

6. Is much less addictive than say cocaine or amphetamines, but it really depends on a person’s personality, right?

7. “…on the basis of its particular drug effect.” Getting high does not cause people to do other drugs (usually!). It is the social network that involves the buying, selling, and using of marijuana that introduces other “harder” drugs into peoples’ lives. It all depends on a person in the end.

9. Marinol is a nice concept, but impractical. Like I said before, it puts people out where you can’t function. Smoking it allows you to regulate the dosage in a responsible manner. Why do you think a higher percentage of medical users prefer to smoke it? Some people ask,”Well, what if they don’t regulate it in a responsible manner?” That should be their choice, not someone else. It is like telling people where to go to church or how to raise their kids.

10. This one confuses me somewhat. Why is the drinking age set to 21 most places? “Because alcohol is addictive and detrimental to a person with a less-developed mind and maturity.” Hmm…. http://www.norml.org

To those of you who decide to bash on the writer of this article because he contradicts himself between numbers 2 & 4.

You are twats. He did not contradict himself. Nowhere does it say “Today, marijuana is stronger so patients can smoke less.” There are different strains of cannabis varying in potency. This was ALWAYS the case. However, it is true that due to attained knowledge over years and our advancing in botanical research, we are able to alter conditions marijuana is grown under in order to produce hybrids and strains that are in fact more potent than past years.

And to Britt, all forms of smoke inhalation cause this air passage irritation. But marijuana actually dilates the lung capacity, therefore making it easier to take deeper breaths, and hold air for longer.

Some people are arguing over number #2 or #4, but just ignore them. It really isn’t that big of a deal. I don’t really remember what #2 or #4 was, but I am sure it isn’t worth the argument.
