Chicago, Illinois Drug Rehab for the Gay and Lesbian

To date, drug rehab programs specializing in drug addiction treatment for the gay and lesbian population lags behind areas such as Miami, Florida, New York or Jacksonville, Florida. Maybe it is due to a smaller LGBT population or drug rehabs that just are not as focused on the gay and lesbian.

Addiction Treatment for the LGBT

Addiction treatment for the gay and lesbian is no different than for a heterosexual with a few exceptions. There is little doubt that a LGBT has issues to deal with that might be a little different than a heterosexual. Heterosexuals don’t have to deal with the ramifications of homophobia or internalized homophobia. For an Illinois drug rehab to effectively treat a gay or lesbian they should at least have gay specific groups to provide a safe place for sensitive issues to be resolved. Everyone needs a non judgemental setting to work through their “stuff”.

Aside from the actual addiction treatment setting comes having a clinical staff trained and educated in the “gay lifestyle” to make them more effective clinicians, not to mention, having resolved any of their issues surrounding homophobia.

Many of the Florida drug rehabs that are effectively treating the gay and lesbian population are located in Jacksonville, Florida. These Florida drug rehabs combine the best that addiction treatment has to offer and have designed addiction programs to meet the needs of the LGBT population.

Drug Rehabs and Success Rates

We read in the papers and watch T.V. as drug rehabs claim fabulous success rates. Some of the drug rehab programs in Malibu, California actually claim success rates upwards of 85% of their patients. With some of their more well known patients relapsing left and right, it is highly doubtful a drug rehab program actually has an 85% rate of recovery.

What is success in a drug treatment program?

A question I would like to see some of the drug rehabs in the country answer. A drug treatment program could claim success to be one year of continuous sobriety, successful completion of the drug treatment program or any other marker they chose to use. Remember we are treating a disease and relapse is almost always part of the disease, so maybe success is getting yourself back into rehab after you relapse.

In most cases relapse occurs within the first couple of months with only  about 20% of the people completing drug rehabs staying clean and sober for one continuous year. That does not mean these people don’t get back on track after their relapse, it just mean they didn’t stay sober.

Drug Addiction Treatment and Recovery

While success rates in the drug addiction treatment world are not very good, there are a few things we know regarding drug treatment programs and recovery. The longer a person spends in a drug addiction treatment program the greater the likelyhood they will stay sober. The continuous support, combined with the healing of the brain work together to produce a person capable of making better choices and not acting as much on impulse.

Lindsay Lohan and Her Drug Addiction Treatment

While everyone is focused on Lindsay Lohan’s fall from grace, I think the real focus should be on the drug addiction treatment she has received from the drug rehabs she has attended. No doubt, Lindsay Lohan is fully responsible for her behavior, but there are questions regarding the philosophy of the drug addiction treatment programs she attended.

Drug Rehabs for the Celebrities

Most of the residential drug rehab programs in the country, unlike the one’s Lindsay Lohan and Britney Spears checked into, do not alllow their patients to go shopping or for that matter leave the drug rehab facility while they are in drug addiction treatment, with the exception of 12 step metings. It seems that Linday Lohan’s drug rehab catered more to her lifestyle than treatment of her addiction. While the rich and famous are used to certain “perks” in life, it is ususally that sense of entitlement or lack of gratitude that got them into trouble in the first place. This is not to insinuate a person needs to throw away all of their riches to get sober, but a drug rehab has a responsibility to give them what they need not what they want.

Drug Rehab and Denial

Drug addiction treatment is to be taken seriously, as is relapse. It is clear from Lindsay’s relapse that her addiction has escalated and it is reported that she checked herself back into the same drug rehab program as before. Did anyone ever tell her that insanity is doing the same thing over and over again expecting different results. It is understandable that Lindsay would want a drug rehab program that is plush and has all the nicest amenities, but there are drug rehabs with different drug addiction treatment philosophies that can provide her the same. It may not be the drug rehab environment as much as the drug rehab program philosophy of care.

For example, a person can practice their shopping skills after drug treatment ,but to learn about recovery you have to be in the class room. In this case, the classroom is a drug addiction treatment program and a 12 step meeting, not a club.

The sad thing is the people, places and things that made her a star and wealthy are the exact same things that will take it all away. Wishing Lindsay Lohan well.

Maryland Drug Rehabs Review Increase in Dual Disorders

Over time, Maryland drug rehabs have begun to see a high prevalence of depression associated with the drug addiction treatment they have been providing. This has led to many of the drug rehabs reviewing the percentage of addicts and alcoholics they admit with co-existing mental health problems. To their astonishment, over 50% of the patients admitted at Maryland drug rehab programs had a secondary mental health problem. This is referred to as a dual diagnosis.

Dual Diagnosis Treatment Integrated Into Drug Rehabs in Maryland

To effectively treat these co-existing disorders, dual diagnosis treatment centers had to be integrated into mainstream drug rehab treatment. This meant that therapists now had to be trained to be able to effectively treat mental health problems. It also meant a reliance on a psychiatrist when in the past, they were only viewed as a necessary evil. Today, we have come to recognize the value of the psychiatrist trained in addiction medicine.
