Alcohol Rehab and Your Road to Recovery
by Jonathan Huttner
Alcoholism has destroyed the lives of more people than I care to mention. How can you tell if someone suffers from alcohol abuse or alcoholism? How do you tell who actually needs alcohol rehab? What is the big deal if Dad has a six-pack every night before he hits the sack; that doesn't necessarily make him an alcoholic; does it? I mean, sure, your buddy Bobby has made a bit of a habit out of having a few too many at the local bar down the street, but does that really make him the town drunk like everybody says he is? Or, how about Mom who has a few glasses of wine before she turns in, does that mean she suffers from alcoholism?
The truth about alcoholism is that it lies just beneath the surface of all of these types of behavior. How do we know who really needs alcohol rehab? The answer to that question is simple: take away the alcohol and you'll quickly find out who's just having fun and who's addicted to alcohol. The person who suffers from alcohol addiction will not be able to abstain from alcohol for any prolonged period of time.
The Definition of Alcoholism
Alcoholism is a chronic, fatal and progressive disease, characterized by continuous cravings and obsessions for more alcohol. Whether through liver and kidney failure or drunk driving, alcoholism claims lives daily. It ruins the lives of those who suffer from alcoholism and also destroys the families that alcoholics belong to. The cravings and obsessions associated with alcoholism take priority over any responsibilities the alcoholic may have. The only true way to change the behavior of an alcoholic is to help him with alcohol recovery through a reputable alcohol rehab program.
Alcohol Rehab
In far too many cases, people never receive the treatment for alcoholism they require. They think everything will just get better over time or that they really are not that bad. Denial is one of the major obstacles that needs to be overcome for a person to accept alcohol rehabilitation.
Alcoholics will do everything in their power to prove they do not require alcohol rehab and can control their drinking. They will try changing when they drink, how much they drink, what they drink, where they drink; and the list goes on. All in the name of not having to admit they suffer from alcoholism and need help. As hard as they try they will never find a better solution to alcoholism or alcohol abuse than a Joint Commission on Accreditation of Hospital Organizations (JCAHO) accredited alcohol rehab.
Alcohol rehabilitation and recovery has never been an easy task. It takes an incredible commitment on the part of the alcoholic. You must be ready to place alcohol rehab in front of everything else. It must be your first priority.
The Best Alcohol Rehab
Now that you know that alcohol rehab works and alcohol recovery is possible, the question is where do you go for alcohol treatment? Most people who find themselves looking for an alcohol treatment center end their search with the same question: "How do I know this is the best alcohol rehab program for me?" The best way to answer that question would be to ask yourself if this alcohol treatment center provides the alcohol rehab services you require to meet your individual needs. Can it tailor itself to the individual? Take the time to match your alcoholism recovery needs with the actual services the alcohol rehab program and treatment center provides.
Successful Alcohol Recovery
Let's face it - there is no guaranteed treatment for alcoholism. The best chance you have to recover from alcoholism comes with finding the right alcohol rehab for your individual needs. The alcohol rehab you choose should be staffed by highly skilled professionals who treat both you and your family. The alcohol rehab center needs to treat your addiction to alcohol, but at the same time, it also needs to be aware of all the psychological and psychiatric conditions that may exist. Alcohol rehab needs to treat the whole person: body, mind and spirit.
